The renewed composition of the platform was formed against the backdrop of a historic high in women’s representation: there are now 41 women MPs in the legislature, compared to only 4% in the first parliament.
The members of the association recalled that the platform of the last convocation had already taken a number of important measures to introduce double gender quotas in the Electoral Code, the possibility of combining work with maternity benefits, the development of children’s groups in organizations, etc. The platform has also promoted the introduction of the Equal Pay Act, flexible working rules and stricter penalties for pushing, harassment and violence in the digital environment.
According to Deputy Speaker of Parliament Doina Herman, joining the European Union also means strengthening women’s rights and equality of opportunity:
“Although we represent different political forces, we are united by common goals: fighting violence, protecting children, supporting mothers and women’s active participation in public life.”
The renewed platform plans to focus on parliamentary oversight. MPs will check how laws work in practice and look for ways to close gaps in the law.
At its next meeting, the Platform is to elect a leadership and a coordinating council. The initiative was supported by UN Women Moldova.
