According to Rijnmond, at least one person has been confirmed dead, and six others were injured. Emergency services, including several ambulance crews and a medical helicopter, arrived at the scene.
The explosion occurred while a third-party maintenance contractor was disconnecting pipelines. Signs of damage are visible on the tank itself. The labor inspectorate has already launched an investigation.
Earlier that morning, a major power outage and a fire at a substation occurred in the Botlek area, causing the ExxonMobil refinery to temporarily suspend production and begin flaring. However, according to the port authority, the explosion at the Gunvor Energy facility and the power outage are not related.

The Port of Rotterdam is Europe’s largest logistics and energy hub, handling approximately 430–440 million metric tons of cargo annually. The Europort area and surrounding territories form the backbone of Northwestern Europe’s oil refining cluster.
The port is of critical importance to the European energy market, the publication notes. Approximately 100 million metric tons of crude oil pass through Rotterdam each year. About half of this volume is processed at local refineries, while the other half is delivered directly via pipeline to major refineries in Germany and Belgium.
Any major accidents or production shutdowns in this area attract heightened market attention, as the port serves as the main hub for the import, refining, and transit of crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and coal for Europe’s industrial heartland.
