“I hope that the budget will provide enough funding for these staff so that the lab can thrive and scientists can analyze the risk factors that lead to demographic changes. Because how many births and how many deaths are dry statistics. We are interested in those scientific directions that will show how to prolong life, what factors shorten it and what problems cause diseases that sometimes lead a person to the desire to leave this world because of unbearable pain”, – said the academician.
Eva Gudumak emphasized that it is important for statisticians and researchers to have in-depth data on risk factors that lead to diseases and premature loss of human life:
“You know, there is now a rejuvenation of diseases and very many pathologies, when a person is no longer happy with the life he or she has been given. Therefore, you need in-depth works and scientific research that will help to understand these risk factors”, – said Eva Gudumak.
In their welcoming messages, the participants in the round table emphasized the role of Academician Gheorghe Paladi in establishing the national demography as a strategic field for understanding the social, economic and medical transformations in Moldova. An outstanding figure of national medicine, Gheorghiu Paladi devoted his scientific activity to the study of population health, fertility, mortality, family, demographic aging and demographic security.
Currently, the Center for Demographic Research named after Academician Gheorghiu Paladi carries out fundamental and applied research in the field of population and development, develops population projections and analyzes indicators of fertility, mortality, migration and population aging. At the same time, the institution provides scientific expertise to public authorities, and the results of research are used in the process of justifying public policy and promoted through national and international cooperation.
The Center for Demographic Research was opened in 1997.
