Solid metal tractor wheels – a return to the roots

There is growing interest in non-standard tractor wheels among European farmers. These are all-metal designs that are gradually making a comeback as an alternative to rubber tires in challenging field conditions.

The solution from the French company Somac is available as dual wheels made of 100% steel, designed for use on waterlogged and flooded soils. Thanks to their high strength and damage resistance, they provide increased load-bearing capacity where standard tires are ineffective. This is reported by Auto 24.

It is noted that the technology is somewhat reminiscent of early designs from the early 20th century, when tractors were equipped with metal wheels featuring lugs. Metal mesh wheels have an open cylindrical structure with asymmetrical blades that improve traction on soft soil. They do not compact the soil; on the contrary, they can promote its aeration and maintain traction even in mud or on flooded areas.

Thanks to this, such wheels can be used not only in rice paddies but also in a wider range of challenging soil conditions.
