According to the authorities, the increase in funding is necessary in the context of updating the detailed technical designs to comply with European standards. Initially, the projects were based on preliminary studies carried out in 2014 and 2021, without taking into account the impact of the war in Ukraine on the road construction sector. As a result, prices for construction materials and labor costs have increased by almost 40% over the last four years. In addition, the scope of planned works has increased following the feasibility study.
As Logos Press previously reported, the funds will be used to rehabilitate and modernize sections of strategic importance, which are part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), necessary to connect Moldova with the European Union road infrastructure through the Leuseni-Albita border point:
Road M1 Chisinau – Leuseni: rehabilitation of the section from km 1 to km 85 (84 km);
Road M2: rehabilitation of the 2nd sector of the Chisinau bypass road from 85th to 94.48th km (9.48 km).
The original loan agreement was signed on January 22, 2024 and ratified in March 2024, entering into force on August 16, 2024.
