The price of inflation: Moldova attracts additional 150 million euros for road repairs

Moldova will increase by 150 million euros the loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for the implementation of the V Road Rehabilitation Project, bringing the total amount of financing to 300 million euros. The decision is due to the increase in prices for construction materials and labor.

road rehabilitation in Moldova

The draft law on the ratification of the agreement on the amendment to the loan agreement between Moldova and the EBRD was sent by the government to the parliament and is currently being examined by specialized commissions.

The main change is the doubling of the loan amount. This addition became necessary because the prices for construction materials and labor have increased significantly in recent years, up to 39% in the period 2021-2025, against the background of economic crises and regional situation. The original budget was insufficient, as it covered only half of the planned scope of work.

The additional funds will be used to complete the reconstruction of two strategically important road sectors: the M1 Chisinau-Leuseni highway, 84 kilometers long, and section 2 of the Chisinau bypass road (M2 highway), about 9.5 kilometers long. These road sectors are part of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and are important for the connection with the European Union through the Leuseni – Albita border point.

In addition to direct repair works, the funding will be used to modernize the Road Asset Management System, which will help the relevant authorities to better monitor road conditions and plan maintenance works to prevent premature deterioration of the infrastructure.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development is the agency responsible for presenting this project to the MPs.
