The new deputy mayor was elected by the votes of 27 municipal councilors. However, the PAS faction did not participate in the vote, as it had earlier left the meeting room due to disagreements on the agenda.

Later, members of the faction called the appointment illegal, as the councilors did not approve the resignation of former vice mayor Irina Gutnik. The PAS representatives also questioned the presence of the quorum necessary for voting.

Presenting Dogotaru’s candidacy, Mayor Ion Ceban said that she has been involved in the development of the capital’s General Urban Development Plan for many years and is one of the most prepared specialists for this position.

Svetlana Dogotaru is now the chief architect of Chisinau. In her new position, the new deputy mayor said, she will focus on urbanism and architecture.

The position of vice-mayor in the capital was vacated after the resignation of Irina Gutnic. Her resignation was accompanied by a loud scandal. The official organized a press conference at which she announced violations and corruption in the mayor’s office and sent complaints about Ion Cheban to law enforcement agencies.

Cheban denied the accusations.
