The Pope has abandoned the Catholic doctrine of “just war”

Pope Leo XIV has rejected the concept of a "just war," which the Catholic Church has used since at least the fifth century to assess whether state involvement in war can be considered justified.

The rejection of this doctrine is contained in the first major encyclical of the new pontiff, published on Monday. Experts believe that this move could have far-reaching consequences for world politics.

Leo XIV called the “just war” theory outdated and said that humanity should focus on diplomacy rather than on finding moral justifications for armed conflicts.

In the same encyclical, the pope called for global regulation of artificial intelligence systems and issued the most unequivocal apology to date for the Catholic Church’s historical role in supporting transatlantic slavery.

Earlier, world media reported that the Pentagon summoned the Vatican envoy to the United States for a closed-door meeting in January. The occasion was a January speech by Pope Leo XIV, in which he said that “diplomacy that promotes dialog and seeks consensus is being supplanted by diplomacy based on force,” and “war is back in vogue, and the zeal for war is spreading.”
