If Moldova were to become a member of the European Union under current conditions, its share of the EU economy would be negligible. A rough comparison based on data from 2025 shows that the Republic of Moldova’s economy would account for approximately 0.1% of the European Union’s GDP, which is comparable to the share of Malta, the member state with the smallest economy in the bloc.

Moldova’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2025 amounted to about 353.5 billion lei at current market prices, representing a 2.4% increase in real terms compared to 2024. In dollar terms, nominal GDP (according to Trading Economics) is estimated at approximately $20.35 billion, which is equivalent to about 18 billion euros. In the same year, the European Union’s GDP reached approximately 18,800 billion euros.

However, Moldovans shouldn’t feel too inferior. The EU includes a country like Malta. Its GDP last year was $27.77 billion, which at today’s exchange rate is equal to 23.97 billion euros. That is “only” 39% more than Moldova’s.

True, Malta’s population is approximately 549,000–563,000 people, which is five times smaller than that of the Republic of Moldova.
