Europeans are taking a closer look at Meta’s smart glasses

Pressure on Meta and other smart glasses manufacturers is mounting as European privacy regulators step up oversight of these devices, which look very similar to ordinary glasses. According to European authorities, covert recording poses risks beyond just privacy.

Hamburg’s Data Protection Commissioner, for example, suggests that wearable devices could be banned in Germany due to the risks of covert recording, the processing of personal data, and data breach scandals.

The built-in camera allows owners to discreetly take photos and videos of those around them, which has led to the gadget being banned at some events and conferences. Artificial intelligence and recognition systems can process people’s personal data without their explicit consent. Commercial lawsuits have already been filed against the company because sensitive footage was processed by contractors.

Such devices, representing a new category of network-connected technologies that pair with a smartphone, are equipped with built-in cameras and microphones that operate using voice commands and artificial intelligence for hands-free digital interaction.

A report on smart glasses by the European Data Protection Board is expected to be published by the end of the summer, a board spokesperson confirmed toEuractiv.
