According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit was initiated as part of discussions between local agricultural producers and representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of the Republic of Moldova regarding the possibility of providing humanitarian shipments of agricultural products to Afghanistan, which is facing serious food insecurity.
The ministry emphasized that the delegation members who arrived in Moldova are not subject to international sanctions. At the same time, Chisinau stated that it does not recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan and strictly adheres to international sanctions regimes.
“In light of this, no bilateral meetings or other official contacts with representatives of the delegation will take place,” the Foreign Ministry said.
Following public outcry, the government ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the issuance of the invitation and entry visas, as well as a review of internal procedures related to such decisions, to ensure compliance with the law and the foreign policy interests of the Republic of Moldova.
Earlier, the Afghan news agency The Kabul Tribune reported that a delegation from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock had arrived in Moldova at the official invitation of the Moldovan side to discuss opportunities for expanding practical and technical cooperation between the two countries. The delegation is led by Sadr Azam Osmani, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock. The visit will last until August 7. As part of the trip, representatives of the Afghan ministry planned to hold talks with the Moldovan side on cooperation in the fields of agriculture, agricultural research and innovation, plant protection, the introduction of modern agricultural technologies, and the implementation of joint practical projects.
