It’s extremely hot in Iran—and not just because of the war

Yesterday, the global temperature record for 2026 was broken. The epicenter of the disaster (in this sense as well) is Iran.

In Dehloran, Iran, the air temperature (measured in the shade) reached 52.1 degrees Celsius. The day before, a temperature of 51.5 degrees was recorded in the same city. However, this is not an all-time temperature record for Iran. In 2017, the air temperature in Ahvaz reached 53.7 degrees.

However, the summer of 2026 is far from over. This year could become the hottest on record. For Western Europe, this June has already been the warmest on record. For example, in Germany, temperature records were broken three days in a row.

Globally, the situation isn’t quite as hot yet (the record was set in 2024). Nevertheless, according to estimates by the World Meteorological Organization, most of the planet could face above-average temperatures this summer. The reason for this is the intensifying El Niño phenomenon.
