“I would question your remarks about the Republic of Moldova—that we share the same language and the same religion as Romania. When it comes to European values and individual values, there are people who believe we share the same language, but others may think differently—that we have two different languages or two different religions,” said the German diplomat.
Knirsch suggested that the question of whether there is a single common language for both sides of the Prut River is a topic on which citizens may have differing opinions, according to national.ro.
Responding to a question about the prospect of a possible unification of the Republic of Moldova and Romania in the context of statements by President Maia Sandu, Knirsch stated that such a decision rests solely with the citizens of the two states.
“This is truly a matter that can only be decided by the peoples of Moldova and Romania; they are two sovereign states. If they wish to unite, they will do so, and no one can comment on that.”
