Turkey proposes to build a $1.2 billion NATO pipeline in Romania

Turkey has proposed to build a fuel pipeline worth 1.2 billion dollars exclusively for military needs. According to the Turkish side, the proposed route could cost 5 times cheaper than alternatives through, for example, Greece or other countries. The proposal will be presented before the July NATO summit in Ankara.

Turkish plans to supply NATO allies on the Eastern European flank were reported on Friday by Bloomberg news agency. The proposed pipeline would run from Turkey to Romania via Bulgaria, they reported.

The project is aimed at strengthening the reliability of the fuel supply chain for the alliance’s eastern members, especially after disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East, and is purely military in nature.

The proposal should not be confused with previously announced commercial gas pipelines, such as the construction by Turkey’s Kalyon Holding of the 308-kilometer (€530 million) Tuzla-Podisor pipeline to transport gas from the Romanian shelf, work on which is already underway, sources said.
