Tour business in Latvia suffers due to drone threat

In Latgale - one of the historical and cultural regions of Latvia, located in the east of the country and attracting travelers, 86% of travel companies have faced cancellation of reservations. Moreover, they are canceled not only for the coming weeks, but for the whole summer.

More than half of those who canceled their reservations admitted: they do so because they are afraid of drones.

“This is definitely a crisis,” Latvian portal Delfi quoted the head of the Latgale Tourist Association Jelena Kijaško as saying. – We have constantly received messages from travel companies about canceling reservations for corporate events, school excursions and individual trips.”

This is how Kijaško characterized the situation in Latgale under the drone threat. And she said that the association members in an open letter addressed the highest officials of the state, ministries and the Saeima, pointing out the threat of crisis in the industry due to drone flights into Latvia.

The events of recent weeks on Latvia’s eastern border – repeated drone incidents, regular airspace threat warnings, alarming reports, the activation of NATO fighter jets and crisis communication dominating public space – have had dire consequences for Latgale’s tourism industry.
