Do the Moldovan authorities have a contingency plan for the capital’s water supply?

The issue of potential water supply problems in Chisinau due to a critical deterioration in “the water quality of the Dniester River and the Novodnestrovsk Reservoir” has garnered attention in the official media and on social media. In some cases, the response was not what the person who initiated the discussion had expected.

Logos Press reported that Acting Minister of the Environment Gheorghe Hazder called on the relevant departments of the Chisinau municipality to “restore critical water supply infrastructure.” According to him, it “is in a severely dilapidated state, and the equipment’s operational reliability remains in question.”

One Facebook user, among other things, reasonably remarked the following: “Yes, the minister is right about one thing: the problem exists. It didn’t appear yesterday, and it won’t go away on its own. The climate is changing, droughts are becoming longer, and the strain on water resources is growing. At the same time, the ministry has all the information on groundwater reserves, the condition of artesian wells, and the quality of water sources, yet there are loud statements in the press as if the ministry isn’t doing its job at all! Couldn’t they have first met with municipal authorities, discussed the risks, prepared a joint plan, and only then addressed the public? From the outside, this looks like just another political soap opera. But for environmentalists and experts, such battles evoke entirely different emotions—anxiety and disappointment.”

One might add—that is, ask—only the following: If the situation with rainfall and the Dniester’s water level does not improve dramatically by July 31, will the Ukrainian side automatically and independently decide to reduce water releases from the Novodnestrovsk Reservoir downstream, or will another emergency meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on the Dniester be convened? And by July 31, will a contingency plan have been developed in case of an emergency affecting the water supply to the capital of the Republic of Moldova? And by whom?
