Tofan addressed this issue in an interview given on the occasion of his first foreign visit as prime minister, which took place in Bucharest

Prime Minister Tofan stated that currently less than 40% of the population of the Republic of Moldova would like to unite with Romania, according to a report by ziare.com on July 30, 2026.

“At the moment, support stands at less than 40%, but this trend is on the rise. And I believe that only the peoples of Romania and the Republic of Moldova can decide on the issue of unification. You know, sometimes I see this issue being lumped into the ‘Plan B’ category, and it seems to me that this is too important an issue. And, if you will, it’s too symbolic to link it, you know, to the so-called ‘Plan B.’ But right now, we’re all focused on ‘Plan A’—Moldova’s accession to the European Union,” Tofan told TVR.

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova emphasized that the issue of reunification is very important, but it is not yet time to discuss it officially. “Reunification is a very important issue. It’s too important a topic to be linked, you know, to the role of a Plan B. It’s important to reach a situation where both banks of the Prut would have, you know, the opportunity to prove themselves. Unfortunately, we are not yet at that stage,” Prime Minister Tofan explained.
