According to the National Anti-Corruption Center, for related crimes, through the partial aggregation of sentences, the court sentenced Grigore Gacikevici, former president of Banca de Economii, to 13 years of imprisonment to be served in a closed-type correctional facility.
Two members of Banca de Economii’s Credit Committee were sentenced to 8 years in prison, to be served in a closed-type correctional facility. Another member was sentenced to 7 years in prison, of which 3 years and 6 months must be served, while the remainder of the sentence was suspended for a 3-year probationary period. A fifth defendant was sentenced to 5 years in prison, with the sentence suspended for 3 years.
According to the prosecution, between 2005 and 2012, Banca de Economii issued loans secured by either overvalued or insufficient collateral. The funds were received by four individuals and 68 companies, and the total losses were estimated at approximately 3 billion lei.
