The ministry described the Romanian authorities’ decision as “unjustified.”
According to RBC, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Liliana Burdu, Romania’s chargé d’affaires, the day before. She spent a few minutes at the ministry and declined to speak with reporters after the meeting.
The diplomatic exchange took place after relations between Moscow and Bucharest deteriorated amid incidents involving drones. Specifically, in late July, the Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that three drones had been shot down in the country’s airspace over the course of three days. Bucharest claimed that the drones were Russian. Subsequently, the Romanian Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev, declared him persona non grata, and recalled its ambassador from Moscow for consultations.
Moscow rejected the accusations. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called them unfounded. The Russian ministry stated that it would not recall its ambassador from Romania but would respond to the expulsion of the diplomat in a timely manner and in the manner it deemed most appropriate.
