“Eurovision” drove up rental prices in Bulgaria to €118,000.

The Bulgarian Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) is preparing to review housing rental offers in Burgas ahead of “Eurovision 2027.” This comes in response to reports of a sharp rise in rental rates, even though there is no housing shortage in the region. Specifically, listings have appeared offering apartments for €118,000 per week.

Alexander Kolyachev, chairman of the Consumer Protection Commission, stated that the commission will respond to reports of unfair trade practices, according to Investor.bg. He noted that price increases resulting from high demand do not, in and of themselves, constitute a violation. However, the housing situation in Burgas is different: there is sufficient accommodation for tourists in the city and the region.

Kolyachev estimated the available capacity at more than 200,000 people. He also cited the experience of the recent competition in Vienna, which, he said, attracted about 90,000 tourists.

The head of the CPC called an ad for an apartment priced at €118,000 per week “ridiculous.”

The regulator will pay particular attention to listings where the old price is crossed out and a new, significantly higher price is listed next to it. According to Kolyachev, this practice may violate Bulgarian consumer protection law.

The Commission also intends to discuss the situation with the Ministry of Tourism and representatives of the hotel industry.

It should be noted that “Eurovision 2027” will take place in Burgas in May of next year. According to Kolyachev, the CPC will increase its presence in the city during the contest and will monitor compliance with consumer rights. Prices must change before the contest begins. The head of the CPC emphasized that businesses have enough time to adjust their offerings to reflect actual demand.
