“Traffic has doubled in just two years, and this year we will exceed 7 million passengers. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the infrastructure can no longer cope,” said Vasile Tofan.
He said that some problems could be resolved in the short term. Accordingly, the Prime Minister has called for more waiting areas to be provided where they are currently lacking, the installation of mobile coffee and food outlets to reduce queues, and the allocation of additional staff to security checkpoints during peak hours.
Tofan also drew attention to the placement of local products in the airport’s retail area.
“It is not right that our wines should be tucked away at the back of the hall, whilst imported whisky occupies the busiest area. The airport is also one of our country’s main showcases,” said the Prime Minister.
According to the Prime Minister, whilst all these measures help, they do not solve the underlying problem: the airport is too small for the volume of traffic it currently handles.
“That is why the reconstruction and extension of the current terminal must begin by October at the latest. The procurement process has already been delayed by appeals, and we can no longer afford to waste time,” said Mr Tofan.
Vasile Tofan also said that the airport’s development is necessary not only for passengers’ comfort, but also to capitalise on the economic opportunities generated by the increase in traffic.
“The recommendations are clear, and some of the measures that can be implemented immediately will be prioritised: expanding waiting areas, enhancing passenger services, boosting processing capacity during peak hours, and ensuring a more visible presence of Moldovan products in the central retail areas,” announced the airport management.
