Pressure on Odessa’s ports is mounting

In the first few months of 2026, the ports of Greater Odessa were subjected to more than 180 attacks—nearly as many as in the entire previous year.

“During peak seasons, this has reduced the country’s export capacity by 20–30%, although the ports are generally capable of handling the workload. But it is still too early to talk about a full recovery,” said Taras Vysotsky, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture, in comments to Bloomberg.

The infrastructure of foreign companies operating in Ukraine has also been affected. This year, facilities belonging to American agricultural giants Bunge and ADM were damaged.

The number of Russian attacks on agricultural infrastructure in the Odesa region has increased significantly since the end of 2025. At the end of last year, Ukraine’s agricultural sector suffered direct losses of more than $11 billion as a result. According to the cited source, this amount includes approximately $6.5 billion in losses from destroyed equipment, damaged infrastructure—particularly grain storage facilities—and lost produce.

At the same time, Taras Vysotsky emphasized that the actual losses of the agricultural sector significantly exceed the estimated amount of direct losses, as they also include lost profits and human capital losses.
