Parliament will consider a bill on the possibility of extending the state of emergency to 90 days

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova will consider a draft law that envisages a change in the procedure of the state of emergency (state of emergency). The initiative envisages that the state of emergency will no longer be fixed at 60 days and will be able to last from 30 to 90 days, depending on the assessment of risk indicators.

As noted in the document, such a measure will allow the authorities to more flexibly adapt actions to the specifics and development of emergency situations.

Commenting on the initiative, the chairman of the Commission on National Security, Defense and Public Order, Lilian Karp, said about the revision of the approach to the emergency regime after its recent early cancellation. “In order to avoid similar situations, we are proposing a more flexible term,” he said.

Parliament earlier supported the cabinet’s proposal to lift the state of emergency in the energy sector from Saturday, April 25. Although it was imposed on March 25, 2026 for 60 days as a result of the Isaccea-Vulcanesti power line outage, it was ended ahead of schedule.

As Logos Press has already written, the document also provides for the strengthening of parliamentary control over the decisions taken under the state of emergency. The government will be obliged to send all measures and restrictions to the specialized parliamentary commissions within 72 hours. MPs will have the right to assess their legality, necessity and proportionality, and, if necessary, to propose changes or abolition.

The authors of the initiative – MPs of the PAS parliamentary majority – say that the changes are aimed at increasing transparency, strengthening democratic control and preserving the ability to react quickly in crisis situations.
