This move marks another phase in the energy crisis caused by the prolonged drought and extreme heat across Europe.
The Paks Nuclear Power Plant, south of Budapest—which typically supplies about one-third of the Central European country’s electricity needs—is cooled by water pumped from the Danube River. The river’s water level has dropped to record lows due to a lack of rainfall and a series of heat waves since May.
“Due to the continued drop in the Danube’s water level, one of the two remaining power units at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant will be shut down at 1:30 a.m.,” Magyar wrote on X.
