The government has introduced this measure to ensure road safety across the country. It is included in a bill that Parliament passed today in its first reading. Sixty-seven members of Parliament voted in favor of it.
The initiative aims to identify hazardous road sections in a timely manner and prevent traffic accidents. The mechanism for periodic assessment of road infrastructure is being implemented as part of the harmonization of national legislation with EU standards.
The bill was presented during a plenary session of Parliament by Nicolai Mândra, State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development. He clarified that the changes developed by the ministry will supplement the existing road safety management mechanisms that were introduced in 2023.
“Thanks to this assessment, investments can be directed to those road sections where they can have the greatest impact,” noted Nikolai Myndra.
The draft also stipulates the obligation of the national road administrator to create and maintain an online voluntary reporting system. Through this system, users will be able to report incidents, defects, and other issues that could affect road safety.
To ensure that inspections are carried out, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development will develop and approve procedures for certifying road safety auditors.
The new provisions are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2028.
