New rules for labeling food eggs: look for the expiration date on the package

If a store customer wants to make sure that the minimum shelf life of purchased chicken eggs has not yet expired, he or she will be able to do so. This week, a government decree was officially published and came into force, obliging egg producers to provide detailed information on the packaging.

In particular, the producer must indicate on the packaging the minimum shelf life of the product (DDM). This period cannot exceed 10 days from the date on which the egg was laid.

Poultry eggs will be classified into two categories: A – for direct consumption, B – for industrial processing. For category A eggs, it is mandatory to indicate on the packaging the method of rearing of laying hens: outdoors, in ground poultry houses, in improved cages.

The National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) will monitor compliance with these regulations along the entire distribution chain, including border crossings for imported products.
