SPIA statistics show a steady increase in the number of such reports in recent years: 45 cases were recorded in the first six months of 2022, 209 in 2024, and 292 in 2025.
At the same time, SPIA initiated 38 criminal cases involving corruption, while investigations into another 29 cases that had been started earlier were continued. Of the total number of cases, 15 involve alleged acts of corruption by Ministry of Internal Affairs employees. The amounts of the bribes offered in these cases ranged from 500 to 100,000 lei.
In addition, the agency conducted integrity checks on approximately 4,000 current and former Ministry of Internal Affairs employees. As a result of these procedures, 120 individuals did not receive a positive finding regarding their compliance with integrity requirements. The main reasons were a lack of an impeccable reputation and violations of the law.
In the first half of 2026, the SPIA also initiated 51 internal investigations, 42 of which have already been completed. As a result of the investigations, 11 employees with special status were subject to disciplinary action.
The agency notes that SPIA’s work also included international cooperation, such as joint actions with the General Directorate for Combating Corruption of the Romanian Ministry of the Interior, as well as participation in working groups on Chapters 23 and 24 as part of the European integration process.
“The implementation of these priorities is aimed at strengthening SPIA’s institutional capacity in the areas of preventing, detecting, and combating corruption; developing an integrity and risk management system; and bringing the agency’s activities into line with European Union standards,” the SPIA statement reads.
