Moldova’s voice will be taken into account in post-war architecture – Mihai Popşoi

Moldova will synchronize its diplomatic efforts with strategic partners in order to guarantee the full observance of its national interests when discussing the new regional security architecture. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mihai Popşoi in an interview with the Eurosecuritate project.

The foreign minister noted the political, diplomatic and financial support from the United States. As concrete examples, he cited the construction of a high-voltage power line, a $36 million defense and security assistance package announced earlier this year, and the recent allocation of $8 million to strengthen the country’s cyber security.

“These are eloquent testimonies that the strong partnership we have built with both our American and European counterparts ensures: our voice will be heard and our opinion will be considered. And when it comes to discussing a possible new security architecture in the post-war context, Moldova’s position will definitely be taken into account. This is what we are working for, this is what we are building together with our partners, and we certainly want to reach it as soon as possible,” Popşoi said.

Not only solidarity, but also pragmatism

The foreign minister explained that Moldova has already become “an integral part of the regional security”. In his opinion, the Western partners are directly interested in Moldova remaining a viable state, capable of ensuring the transit of energy resources and investments, including in connection with Romania and Ukraine.

“Until now, Moldova did not have the necessary infrastructure. Now that American and European investments, as well as our own investments – for example, in energy security, sustainability of the gas system and high-voltage lines – will increase our relevance and role on the regional arena, partners support us not only out of kindness and solidarity, but also out of their own strategic and economic interests,” Popşoi emphasized.

In conclusion, the Deputy Prime Minister added that ending the war in Ukraine is an urgent task, as the latest escalations continue to claim human lives and undermine the economic potential of the entire region:

“And this absolutely does not benefit the Russian Federation in any way. I think they are starting to realize this themselves, if they didn’t realize it from the very beginning.”
