The decision was made amid an ongoing political crisis following the collapse of the ruling coalition and attempts to form a new government, Reuters reports.

On June 24, the PSD leadership announced that the party was ready to take responsibility for governing the country and was nominating Sorin Grindeanu as its candidate for prime minister. The party also stated that it would not support a cabinet in which it did not participate.

Grindeanu said that the PSD intends to negotiate with other pro-European political forces to reach an agreement on support for the future government.

Political uncertainty persists

The PSD’s proposal marks the latest stage in Romania’s political crisis following the collapse of the previous coalition. An earlier attempt to form a new cabinet failed after Prime Minister-designate Adrian Vestea was unable to secure the necessary parliamentary support.

If the parties fail to reach an agreement, Romania could face the prospect of early parliamentary elections, Reuters reports.

Political stability remains one of the key factors for Romania amid the need to implement budget reforms, fulfill its obligations to the European Union, and maintain investor confidence.

Earlier, Sorin Grindeanu emphasized that the political crisis and delays in forming a functional government could lead to a full-blown economic crisis in the country.
