The development of intermodal transport solutions in Romania and Moldova has attracted the interest of German companies in the transport and logistics sector. According to Moldova’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR), the event offers German companies the chance to discuss infrastructure projects, partnerships and opportunities for developing transport and logistics services in the region directly with representatives of the authorities and industry in Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

Moldova presented transport projects

Speaking to representatives of German and Romanian companies, MIDR State Secretary for Transport Mircea Păscălucă outlined the current status and strategic vision for major rail, road and port infrastructure projects, as well as opportunities for cooperation to develop links between the Republic of Moldova, Romania and the European transport network.

In the rail sector, he noted the launch of a tender for the electrification of the first section of the Iași–Ungheni railway line, including infrastructure within the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, he highlighted the start of the process to draw up a feasibility study for the extension of the European-gauge line and its electrification from Ungheni to Chișinău.

‘In the future, we plan to extend this link towards Revaci, near Chisinau International Airport, where we will establish a new multimodal logistics centre. The feasibility study for this centre has already been completed. As part of this project, we aim to integrate rail transport with road transport, logistics terminals and international freight flows,” said Păscăluță.

In the road sector, the State Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) spoke about the extension of the A8 motorway, known as the ‘Autostrada Unirii’, within the Republic of Moldova, and the development of a multimodal logistics centre in Berești. These projects are viewed as part of a highly efficient transport link between Romania and Moldova, with the prospect of extending connections to Ukraine.

The State Secretary also emphasised the need to simplify border crossing procedures, ensure coordinated controls and digitise transport documents.

Another area of discussion was the development of ports and multimodal logistics links. Mircea Păscălucă highlighted the strategic role of the Giurgiulești International Free Port and proposed developing a joint strategy for the Giurgiulești port complex in coordination with the ports of Galați and Constanța.

The programme for the German business economic mission includes working visits to the Giurgiulești International Free Port, the Port of Galați and the Port of Constanța, as well as meetings with operators in the rail transport and logistics sectors. These visits provide participants with the opportunity to examine the existing infrastructure, interconnections between different modes of transport and opportunities for cooperation.
