It remains Moldova’s most important export market. According to data presented at the event, exports to the neighboring country accounted for 29% of total exports in 2025, and an additional 10% growth was recorded in the first four months of 2026.

Moreover, this growth was driven not only by agri-food products and wine—which are traditionally exported to Romania—but also by services, for which we have a positive trade balance with Romania. Overall, however, the trade balance is negative, as petroleum products and energy account for the lion’s share of Romanian exports to Moldova.

However, compared to Romania’s total imports, which exceed 130 billion euros per year, Moldova’s share—amounting to approximately 1 billion euros—points to enormous potential for growth and diversification.

“Romania is a rapidly developing market with growing consumer purchasing power and increasingly high expectations,” noted Irina Tolstousov, deputy director of the Investment Agency. “Success can no longer be guaranteed by low prices. Romanian consumers are looking for products with an authentic story, impeccable quality, and attractive packaging.”

“Despite our geographical proximity, success in Romania does not come on its own and requires thorough preparation, an understanding of what the customer wants, a constant presence on store shelves, and bringing one’s standards into line with the requirements of major retail chains,” emphasized Andrei Crigan, chairman of the Moldovan-Romanian Joint Chamber of Commerce.

In the second part of the event, Moldovan entrepreneurs—representatives of companies in the furniture, confectionery, and packaging industries—shared their practical experience working in Romania.
