Every day 400 thousand cars take to the streets of Chisinau

The number of cars registered in Moldova in 2025 exceeded 1.38 million, increasing by 210 thousand units over three years. Dense traffic is especially felt in the capital. In Chisinau, about 400 thousand cars travel daily, which provokes constant traffic jams, worsens the environmental situation and overloads the city's infrastructure.

According to the data analyzed for the transport sector, the annual volume of passengers transported increased from 196.9 million in 2021 to 333 million in 2025, (+69%). Public transport recorded a growth of 8.3% compared to the previous year.

The mobility structure remains highly unbalanced: more than 99% of trips are made by road and urban transport, while rail passenger transport accounts for less than 1%. This heavy reliance on road transport contributes to overloading existing infrastructure and increasing the risks of congestion.

The authorities have developed a National Strategy for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for the period 2026-2035. The document aims to modernize and digitalize the transport sector by improving the safety, efficiency and sustainability of mobility.

The strategy provides for the establishment of a unified national framework for transportation data management, interoperability of digital systems, and the establishment of a National Mobility Data Access Point. Strengthening governance, digitalization of services and gradual integration into EU standards are also objectives.

The draft strategy was developed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development with technical support from the Permanent Secretariat of the Transport Community and will be presented at the Government meeting.
