The statement was made during a telephone conversation between the head of Moldova’s Cabinet of Ministers and Luc Frieden, Prime Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

The parties discussed next steps in the negotiations on the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the EU, as well as the development of economic and investment relations between the two countries.

Vasile Tofan thanked Luxembourg for its continued support of the Republic of Moldova and its firm support for the European Union’s enlargement policy.

The prime ministers also discussed opportunities to expand economic and investment cooperation and agreed to maintain an active dialogue between Chisinau and Luxembourg.

Luxembourg holds a special place on the Republic of Moldova’s path toward Europe, according to a government press release. On June 25, 2024, the first Republic of Moldova–EU Intergovernmental Conference was held here, marking the official opening of accession negotiations. Two years later, on June 15, 2026, also in Luxembourg, Moldova began negotiations on Cluster 1—“Fundamental Values”—the first cluster of accession negotiations.
