Moldova intends to work more closely with the Middle East

The Middle East is an extremely important region for the Republic of Moldova from an economic standpoint, and the government intends to make more active use of the opportunities the region offers. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi.

“The Middle East is an extremely important region for us from an economic standpoint. We have increasingly close ties with the United Arab Emirates. We will work to capitalize on these opportunities, as our citizens and business community need diplomatic support to open up new opportunities that can subsequently be pursued independently or in partnership with economic actors in the respective countries,” Popșoi said in a broadcast on public television.

In this context, the minister also spoke about the resumption of relations with Saudi Arabia, noting that the Republic of Moldova has signed a political agreement with that country.

“We will seek solutions, despite budgetary constraints, to be closer to our citizens and provide opportunities for our country’s business community—by attracting investment and, in particular, promoting our exports. One of the important steps taken in recent years was that, upon taking office, I learned we did not have a basic political agreement with Saudi Arabia—the largest country in the Middle East and a very influential nation. “We signed this agreement, and now we have resumed relations,” Popshoi stated.

Expanding foreign relations is part of the Republic of Moldova’s broader efforts to strengthen its diplomatic presence beyond Europe. In recent years, diplomatic missions have been opened in New Delhi and Kazakhstan, and the authorities are considering the possibility of opening new missions in Egypt and South Korea. The foreign minister also stated earlier that Moldova will appoint ambassadors to countries in Africa and Latin America. The diplomats will work out of Chisinau and periodically visit countries where bilateral relations need to be developed.

At the same time, despite plans to expand its diplomatic presence in other regions, the immediate priority remains strengthening the Republic of Moldova’s presence in the European Union. To this end, there are plans to open branches of the Republic of Moldova’s embassies in Oslo and Copenhagen.
