Moldova Has Managed to Reduce Its Reliance on Remittances from Russia — Maia Sandu

“We have managed to reduce our dependence on remittances from the Russian Federation,” said President Maia Sandu. According to her, between 2012 and 2014, more than half of all remittances to Moldova came from Russia; now, the country’s dependence on them is “very low.”

“After Russia illegally annexed Crimea and the West imposed sanctions—which were insufficient—these sanctions nevertheless led to job losses among the diaspora, including Moldovan citizens. And more and more of our compatriots have left for European countries. Therefore, our dependence on remittances from the Russian Federation is now very low,” the president said during a public radio broadcast.

The president also spoke about the reduction in Moldova’s trade and energy dependence on Russia.

“And this has happened over the past 15 years, despite the embargo and restrictions imposed by the Russian Federation on Moldovan products. Yes, we know that around 2010, our trade dependence—both in terms of exports and imports—on the Russian market was very high. Now it stands at 2–3%,” the head of state noted.

Sandu emphasized that Moldova has also managed to diversify its energy sources.

“Together with our citizens, during this difficult period marked by crises and rising prices, we were able to diversify energy supplies to Moldova, and today Russia can no longer blackmail us,” Sandu stated.
