Demand for “cash” shows no signs of slowing down

Demand for “cash” in the country remains traditionally high. In June, as in previous months of 2026, the volume of cash withdrawals by citizens and businesses exceeded the volume of cash they deposited back into bank vaults. The total amount of cash withdrawn from checking and savings accounts, ATMs, and bank teller windows in June 2026 amounted to 16,506 million lei.

According to the latest data from the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), in June alone, cash withdrawals increased by 371 million lei (+2.3%) compared to the previous month, reflecting consistently high demand for cash from households and businesses.

The NBM also recorded a surplus of cash outflows over inflows of 109 million lei. A full report on the dynamics of cash transactions is available on the regulator’s official website, which shows a steady demand for cash each month.

During the reporting month, cash inflows totaled 16,397 million lei, an increase of 784 million lei (+5%) compared to the same month of the previous year.

Traditionally, the main source of cash inflows to banks is retail revenue from the sale of consumer goods, which in June totaled 9,876 million lei (60.2% of the total), which is 664 million lei more than in the previous year (+7.2%).
