Belgium Will Expand Its Support for Moldova’s Healthcare System

The Belgian Agency for International Cooperation (ENABEL) will expand its activities in Moldova. The main focus will be on strengthening the resilience of the healthcare system and developing capacity to respond to public health emergencies. This topic was discussed during Health Minister Emil Ceban’s official visit to Brussels, which is taking place June 29–30.

The minister held meetings with representatives of several medical institutions and international organizations. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the field of healthcare, developing the healthcare system, and supporting reforms in the Republic of Moldova.

During the meeting with ENABEL Director General Jean Van Wetter, they discussed opportunities to expand the agency’s activities in the Republic of Moldova in the coming period. Particular attention was paid to enhancing the resilience of the healthcare system, as well as to capacity building in the areas of prevention, preparedness, and response to public health emergencies. The parties emphasized ENABEL’s role as a facilitator of cooperation between healthcare institutions and relevant agencies in Belgium and Moldova through the development of institutional partnerships, exchanging expertise, and implementing joint projects that contribute to the modernization of the healthcare system and the strengthening of national capacity in this area.

At a meeting with Paul Herijgers, Executive Director of the University Hospital of Leuven (UZ Leuven), the parties discussed prospects for developing academic and university partnerships between Moldovan medical institutions and the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven). In particular, the discussion focused on joint training programs, clinical internships for medical personnel, and joint research projects in areas such as oncology, cardiovascular diseases, public health, and the digital transformation of the healthcare system. In addition, the parties explored the possibility of signing memorandums of understanding, as well as expanding cooperation in the fields of cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, oncology, and telemedicine.

During a meeting with Pandemic Fund Executive Director Pria Basu and Deputy Executive Director Mikael Garnier-Laval, the Minister of Health presented a progress report on the implementation of a $10 million grant. These funds are allocated to strengthen the Republic of Moldova’s capacity to prevent, prepare for, and respond to public health emergencies. Discussions focused on modernizing the infrastructure of the National Public Health Agency, developing a network of specialized laboratories, strengthening institutional capacity, and implementing reforms to the emergency medical services. The parties also explored the possibility of applying for new grants.
