Urgent social measures are needed to fight poverty – opinion

Poverty and inequality remain a critical threat for the Moldovan population, most acutely affecting rural residents, families with many children, the elderly and people with disabilities. This was stated by Angela Cutasevici, MP from the MAN party, based on data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

According to NBS data, in 2025, the absolute poverty threshold was 3,764 lei per month per person, and more than 31% of the population was below this line. At the same time, the extreme poverty threshold amounted to 3,035 lei per month and the extreme poverty rate reached 15%.

“These data clearly show that social policy should be based on real categories of vulnerability: families with many children, elderly people, people with disabilities, residents of rural areas and high-risk regions,” Angela Cutasevici emphasized.

The deputy drew attention to the fact that villages suffer much more than cities. In rural areas, the level of absolute poverty reached 40%, which is almost twice as high as in cities, while the level of extreme poverty in villages amounted to 20.2% compared to 9.4% in urban areas.

Angela Cutasevici insists on the need for urgent social measures that must reach people directly: ensuring adequate income, functioning social services, and access to quality education, health care, housing and decent jobs.
