The report covered the period from 2020 to 2024. Subsequent achievements and future goals through the end of the decade are addressed in the next reporting period and relate primarily to European integration.
The report highlighted Moldova’s key achievements: numerous improvements in the areas of social protection, health care, and education; enhanced energy security and the expansion of digital public services; and the strengthening of gender equality and democratic institutions. The role of official statistics in collecting high-quality data in these areas was emphasized.
Among the unresolved issues and challenges related to the SDGs were: persistent poverty and inequality between rural and urban areas, the need to accelerate the “green” and digital transitions, as well as the country’s vulnerability to climate change and economic instability.
The Role of the NBS: Ensuring the Reliability of Achievements
As the coordinating body, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) annually collects and compiles data provided by more than 40 central government agencies and other institutions. Currently, data are available in full or in part for approximately 82% of the national set of SDG indicators.
Expanding data availability has been made possible by the development of statistical capacity and the introduction of new statistical surveys: “Time Use,” “Children’s Activities,” “Women’s Well-being and Safety,” and “Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Households.”
A module on “Prevalence of Undernutrition and Moderate or Severe Food Insecurity Among the Population” has also been developed, along with others designed to fill data gaps.
The statistical annex developed by the National Bureau of Statistics includes individual indicators disaggregated by sex, age, place of residence, and other relevant characteristics, reflecting a commitment to the principle of “leaving no one behind.”
Data on national SDG indicators are published annually on the national SDG indicator dissemination platform, which is updated by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) based, in part, on data from other institutions.
