The rains will hurt the “farmer’s cherry” crop

Precipitation in late May - early June, especially prolonged precipitation, may significantly reduce the already pessimistic forecast for this year's cherry crop. The bulk of production during this period is the so-called "farm cherries": local early maturing varieties, small caliber, sold exclusively on the domestic market of Moldova.

Earlier, representatives of the Association “Moldova Fruct” reported that spring frosts caused significant damage to the plantations of late varieties of cherries of foreign selection (“Cordia”, “Regina”, “Ferovia”, etc.), the production from which forms the export resource of the country. According to preliminary estimates, the shortfall in harvest from these orchards this year may amount to 40-70%.

In 2025, specialists of the association estimated the export of Moldovan cherries at 8 thousand tons (2 thousand tons less than in the previous year).

According to expert estimates, the total area of cherry orchards in Moldova is about 5.3-5.5 thousand hectares. The average harvest of these fruits fluctuates within 15-20 thousand tons.
