Moldova among the top three leaders in alcohol consumption in the post-Soviet space

At the beginning of 2026, Moldova ranked "honorably" third among the countries of the former Soviet Union in the WHO ranking on alcohol consumption, according to Logos Press.

The indicator of our country is 14.1 liters/year in the equivalent of 100% alcohol for each inhabitant over 15 years of age. It is only slightly behind the corresponding indicator of Latvia (14.7 liters/year) and Georgia (15.5 liters/year). And the world rating is headed by Romania (17 liters/year), writes naked-sciense.ru.

Alcohol consumption is influenced by cultural, historical, economic and social factors. European countries regularly appear in the ranking of the world’s most drinking countries. In contrast, some countries in the Middle East and Central Asia almost never drink alcohol.
