The tobacco factory in Orhei, International Tobacco Ltd. processes 205 million units of tobacco products (cigarettes) annually. The factory employs 80 people, and the amount of taxes and fees paid annually reaches 325 million lei. Only in recent years, more than 40 million lei have been invested in the modernization of the factory.
International Tobacco” Ltd. tries to preserve the industry, which once played a key role in the Moldovan economy, and strives to revitalize it. The company not only carries out production activities, but also develops sustainable partnerships aimed at the development of the tobacco industry. Given the historical importance of this industry to Moldova’s economy, the stakes in this process are extremely high. Thus, during the Soviet period (reference 1983-1985), about 77 thousand hectares were planted to tobacco in Moldova. In 1975, the contribution of the tobacco industry to GDP was 22.9%. Also during the Soviet period, employment in tobacco production amounted to 24.3% of the total working age population.
Of course, today it is difficult to imagine a return to the previous indicators, but in case of successful revival of the industry, both the state, due to increased revenues in the form of taxes and fees, and the citizens, who will get decent paid jobs in their homeland, will benefit. In the meantime, Internațional Tobacco Ltd. remains the pillar that keeps alive the hope that this important industry will one day regain its former importance.
