As Vasile Charban, State Secretary of the Sectoral Ministry, noted at the official part of the festival, the National Plum Festival is a very colorful confirmation of the fact that Moldova’s fruit growing sector has a great potential for economic growth, relying mainly on local resources. At the same time, Moldovan fruit growing is an important driver of modernization of rural economy, creation of wide opportunities for employment of rural population and diversification of the range of goods for domestic and foreign markets.
In this regard, it is worth recalling that two years ago Moldova became the largest exporter of plums among the countries of the Northern Hemisphere. In 2023, the country exported 86 thousand tons of plums, including 56 thousand tons to the EU market. In 2025, from July to the beginning of September the export of plums from Moldova has already exceeded 15 thousand tons, i.e. the duty-free quota for the supply of this Moldovan product to the European market, which was in force for the current year, has already been chosen. Therefore, local plum producers will definitely need the authorities’ assistance in expanding preferential access to the EU market.
