The government has submitted for public comment a draft resolution on amendments to a number of regulatory acts, developed by the Agency for Public Services.
According to the draft, individuals over the age of 18 who, in accordance with the legislation in effect at the time of their birth, acquired citizenship of the Republic of Moldova by law but do not have documents confirming this status will be able to file an application to establish their citizenship.
The processing time for such applications will be up to one month. By comparison, the total processing time for applications to acquire Moldovan citizenship can be up to one year.
The procedure will apply to individuals born after July 4, 1991. It was on this date that the first citizenship law of the independent Republic of Moldova came into effect.
A fee of 800 lei is proposed for the service of establishing citizenship in the Republic of Moldova.
The draft must undergo the required approval procedures.
It should be noted that the issue of citizenship acquired by birth was raised following the case of a young man born in the Republic of Moldova who was deemed stateless because he had not obtained an identity card before turning 18. However, he had a Moldovan birth certificate; moreover, he had completed military service in the Moldovan Armed Forces.
