The ANSA Agency is fighting a quarantine pest—phytoplasma

The National Food Safety Agency reports the detection in the vineyards of the Republic of Moldova of a quarantine pest—the grapevine flavescence dorée phytoplasma—which causes a golden yellowing of grapevines. The presence of this quarantine organism is known within the European Union and is of concern to the Republic of Moldova.

The pathogen is transmitted primarily by insect vectors, particularly the cicada Scaphoideus titanus, as well as through the use of infected vegetative planting material.

The European Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) classifies the pathogen as a Type A2 quarantine pest.

Outbreaks of the pathogen in the Republic of Moldova were detected as a result of phytosanitary surveillance conducted both on mother plantations intended for growing seedlings and on fruit plantations. Its official presence was confirmed by a test report issued by the Laboratory for the Control of Plant Products and Phytosanitary Products (IP CNSAPSA), designated as the reference laboratory.

To implement phytosanitary measures, the ANSA agency established a task force and took steps to delineate the areas of spread, implement emergency measures to eradicate the outbreak, and remove infected vines from the vineyards. At the same time, infected mother vineyards will be removed from the Register of Mother Vineyards, and restrictions will be imposed on the movement of planting material without official authorization.
