The country is seeing an increase in foreign currency reserves

The positive trend in the money transfer market has strengthened against the backdrop of the full integration of the Moldovan banking sector into the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). According to experts, this has enabled citizens and members of the diaspora to significantly reduce transaction costs for cross-border transfers.

The July figure exceeded that of the previous month (in June, the volume of transfers amounted to $181.3 million) and was also significantly higher than the figure for the same period last year, when $153.37 million was recorded in July.

The origin and purpose of the remitted funds may vary. The funds are received through commercial banks and international money transfer systems. A significant portion of the funds is directed toward supporting households and current consumption.

The euro (EUR) continues to play a key role in the currency composition of remittances, with its share having remained consistently above 80% of total foreign currency inflows in recent months. The share of the U.S. dollar fluctuates between 15% and 20%, while remittances in Russian rubles have dropped to zero.

As a reminder, in the first half of 2026, the total amount of remittances to individuals in Moldova came very close to the one-billion mark, totaling $967 million. Remittances from abroad remain one of the most important sources of foreign currency inflows, helping to maintain bank liquidity and the population’s purchasing power, as well as stimulate domestic consumption in the country.
