Nicolae Margarint
MP Nicolae Margarint made this statement during a discussion of a bill to amend a number of regulatory acts, including the Code on Audiovisual Media Services.
Nicolae Margarint drew attention to warnings from the National Anti-Corruption Center, which noted that the new definition of disinformation could lead to a differentiated approach toward media content providers.
The lawmaker also questioned the removal of the requirement to prove that information is false and expressed concern that the new provision could be used against undesirable media outlets and critical opinions.
“Why was it decided to remove the requirement to prove that the information is false? And what guarantees do we have that this provision will not be used against unwelcome media outlets and critical opinions?” Margarint asked.
According to the lawmaker, such provisions must be examined with particular care to ensure that the authorities do not turn these new regulatory tools into a mechanism for exerting pressure on critical media outlets and restricting freedom of expression.
