Vyacheslav Ionice
Economist Veaceslav Ionita presented this forecast. According to his estimates, in 2026 the country’s gross agricultural product will amount to 51.6 billion lei—a 12% increase compared to last year’s figure (46.7 billion lei).
Veacesla Ionita points out that this growth is primarily driven by agricultural enterprises. Shortly after the collapse of the USSR, corporate agriculture in Moldova lost ground within the sector’s structure—in favor of the so-called “individual sector,” small farms, and households (individuals). However, the trend has now reversed. Currently, agricultural production in the individual sector generates output totaling approximately 20 billion lei, whereas in the corporate sector (agricultural producers operating as legal entities)—more than 31 billion lei.
As the expert notes, the development of agriculture is taking place against a relatively positive economic backdrop: Moldova’s gross domestic product is also projected to exceed the figures of previous years. By the end of 2026, GDP is estimated to exceed 377 billion lei, increasing by at least 2.2% compared to last year’s level.
According to Veaceslav Ionita, following the economic downturn of 2022, the economy stagnated for three years, and it will not be until 2026 that GDP will exceed the 2021 level. Over the past ten years, the economy of the Republic of Moldova has grown by an average of approximately 1.7% per year. Compared to 1991 levels, the country’s GDP in 2026 will be about 95.1%.
