
At the same time, Transelectrica confirms that Romania’s National Power System is operating within operational safety parameters, although Power Unit No. 1 at the Cernavodă Power Plant remains out of service due to the drought on the Danube.
The national power system dispatcher clarifies that it is prepared to operate the power system, including in the event that both power units are taken offline, and that the second power unit may be shut down if “technical conditions so require.”
Under these conditions, a controlled shutdown of the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant would remove a total capacity of approximately 1,400 MW from the Romanian power grid. This capacity is equivalent to approximately 19–20% of the electricity consumption recorded in Romania during peak-load hours.
The simultaneous unavailability of these two power units could lead to an increased need for electricity from other sources, including imports, and put upward pressure on prices in Romania’s “day-ahead” market.
Depending on its needs and trading conditions, the Republic of Moldova purchases approximately 10–15% of its required electricity on the market operated by the Romanian exchange OPCOM. Consequently, the direct impact on the average cost of electricity purchases for the Republic of Moldova is assessed as limited; however, it will depend on the duration of the unavailability of regional capacity, consumption levels, and price dynamics during the relevant hours.
Currently, electricity supply to consumers in Moldova is proceeding normally, without restrictions or interruptions.
