Representatives of the National Environmental Guard (an environmental NGO, not a government agency) say they arrived at the scene after receiving information about the illegal storage of medical supplies.
During their inspection, they allegedly discovered thousands of IV tubes and dozens of metric tons of plastic, according to ziare.com.
However, the most unusual discovery involved Romanian documents. Activists claim that hundreds or even thousands of driver’s licenses were found at the landfill, though it is unclear how they ended up there or who transported them. Images were shared on social media, and the case quickly drew the attention of the authorities. The Environmental Protection Inspectorate, the relevant authority in the Republic of Moldova, announced that it had been notified of the incident and had launched an investigation.
Inspectors will assess the damage and notify other agencies
Inspection teams are tasked with documenting the situation in Porumbeni, determining the origin of the waste, and calculating the potential environmental damage. In the case of the driver’s licenses, the relevant authorities will be notified, as the documents may contain personal data and should not have ended up in a regular landfill.
The inspection agency stated that it will cooperate with other relevant authorities and that any penalties will be determined after the inspections are completed.
The results of the investigation are expected to be made public. However, given Moldovan practice, they may be kept under wraps—depending on who is found to be at fault.
